MAR DE GRISES have awakened! The South American death doom ambassadors have remained painfully silent for more than a decade after the members parted ways to pursue other projects. The Chilean band pioneered a metal sound firmly rooted in the genre’s tradition while adding a modern approach, melancholia, and a cinematic vision. Inspired by the “Sea of Greys” surrounding a country trapped between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, their music reflected Chile itself: from the Strait of Magellan, Cape Horn, and Tierra del Fuego in the south, through Santiago and the Valdivian forests, to the Atacama Desert in the north. MAR DE GRISES transformed all this richness into metal. Among the few Chilean bands signed by European labels, they first joined Firebox in Finland before moving to Season of Mist. They toured Europe with SÓLSTAFIR, SWALLOW THE SUN, and SATURNUS, played festivals, and shared stages with ENSLAVED, OPETH, and KATATONIA among many others. Their silence ended with a special reunion show in 2025, which reignited the fire: creative energy had returned and new songs began to flow. MAR DE GRISES are currently finishing a new album.
